SEMERU MOUNTAIN

famous in me by bedtime stories when i was a kid, the name of semeru is derived from sanskrit's words "mahameru". where's 'maha' refer to 'the most' and 'meru' is refer to 'the roof' which can be found in hinduism temples. so, the whole meaning is 'the highest'.
and in fact, mount semeru is indeed the highest mountain in java, 3,676 m above sea level. also counted as one of the most active volcano in indonesia.

based on folklore, said that mount semeru was directly sent from india continent. long time ago, java island looks unstable. floating in the ocean and played by the waves. so batara guru [the highest gods in hindu mythology] decided to nail down part of mount everest [himalaya range] into java.

vishnu turn into giant turtle to carry this part on his back, meanwhile brahma change into a snake to tie-up the mountain during the trip from india. and in the end, shiva look after mahameru in its new place on east java. until today ....
